The pro-government Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong has mounted a $500,000 campaign to attract more professional and business people to its ranks.
But the party has rejected suggestions it wants to compete with the business-based Liberal Party.
The DAB wants to double its membership from the 1,800 recorded early this year. It says it is well on the way to achieving this with a 78 per cent increase reported, including February's merger with the Hong Kong Progressive Alliance.
The campaign, which started on Friday and will end by October 5, includes video displays on buses and posters displayed at MTR stations.
Vice-chairman Tam Yiu-chung said: 'We had a lot of working-class members and now it is time to broaden our realm of representation. By recruiting professionals, we have more different voices when it comes to the drafting of government policies.
'I have confidence in meeting our target,' he said, rejecting suggestions the party was aiming to compete with the Liberals.
