South Bay Beach is one of the more laid-back spots at which to unwind in Hong Kong. Not only is it a clean little suntrap, but it's a fair distance from the noisy road that runs through neighbouring Deep Water and Repulse bays. What makes South Beach even more alluring, however, is an open-roofed bar and restaurant on the beach. Merkabah may look like an unusual venue at first, but it has one of the best decks on which to relax in Hong Kong. Opened in April, the bar can be rented for private parties (from $150 a head) and recently hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival bash. Merkabah customises its service, be it finger food for a children's party or an all-you-can-eat barbecue. Beach games such as volleyball can be played below the deck and there's a well-stocked bar to keep you watered. Merkabah opens at 9am and closes at 6pm on weekdays, but usually stays open later on weekends. Merkabah is at South Bay Beach, Bay Road, South Bay, tel: 2812 6015.
