Yes.  Every year about 35 per cent of Form Five students fail the exam. What should they do after their results are released? My answer is: Have another go.

Failing the HKCEE means that a student cannot get a Grade E or above in five subjects, including Chinese, English and mathematics.

Students who cannot even obtain a Grade E have a poor knowledge of the subject.

I suggest that they repeat Form Five  to enhance their basic knowledge. This will help them in their future careers.

Nowadays,  students who fail the HKCEE have many options in pursuing further education.

The Institute of Vocational Education (IVE)  and Project Yi Jin offer many learning opportunities.

However, these programmes may be too hard for them, and their parents may have to pay more tuition fees for the courses.

Students who fail the HKCEE will have a tough time finding a job.

Hong Kong's labour market is still weak and there are highly qualified people who are unemployed.

Ask yourself this question: Did you try your best in the HKCEE? If not, you should repeat Form Five, improve your study methods and take the HKCEE again.

I am sure if you work hard enough, you will succeed in your second attempt.

I don't think you should spend one more year in Form Five if you fail the HKCEE.

History tends to repeat itself. If you don't work hard, you won't do well even on your second attempt.

Last year, about half of the HKCEE candidates were repeaters. Think about it.  Why did you fail the last time?

Was it because of an illness, a love affair, a family problem or just laziness?

Have you got potential in areas other than academic subjects?

The most important thing is: Do you have a dream and are you determined to achieve it?

If your answer is yes, congratulations, you can choose another road and still reach your destination.

There are many choices available, including programmes offered by  the IVE,  Project Yi Jin,  Hong Kong Institute of Education, SPEED of the Polytechnic University and SCOPE of the City University of Hong Kong.

The Labour Department offers  youth pre-employment training programmes which are free  for Form Five school leavers. They can also gain work experience in the process.

So why get stuck in Form Five classrooms? Seize the day and explore new avenues that can enrich your life.
