A listed retail company with extensive presence in Hong Kong and mainland China is looking to hire a general manager. The company is involved primarily in the manufacturing, marketing, and selling of lifestyle products across Hong Kong. 'The appointee will have full responsibility for Hong Kong retail operations, including formulating effective strategies for sales, marketing and product development, and improving customer services and operating efficiency to achieve annual sales targets,' said Shirley Pun, consultant, Executive Recruitment Practice KPMG in China and Hong Kong. Responsibilities are extensive and include planning long-term business development strategies and ensuring effective implementation of these strategies, plus proposing annual business and operation plans with precise and concise analysis. A proven ability to work with staff in executing business plans to achieve sales targets and quality customer services is essential. 'Monitoring and measuring sales' performance by using KPIs [key performance indicators] for modern retail management practices and driving and up-keep of retail servicing standards in order to provide an unparalleled shopping experience are also part of the position,' Ms Pun said. Applicants need to be degree holders in business management or an equivalent discipline with at least 12 years' working experience in retail chains, fashion or luxury retail organisations. Ms Pun said: 'It will also be necessary to have had recent experience at a senior managerial level and prior exposure in managing multinational retail chains or large department stores will be an added advantage.' She said to be successful in the highly competitive retail market, candidates will need an outgoing personality with the ability to communicate with staff at all levels, from the shop floor to senior management. 'Applicants need to be highly-motivated team players,' Ms Pun said. Other duties include supervising daily operations and leading store managers to exceed business targets and maximising operation efficiency through continuous improvements. The general manager will also be responsible for team building, resources allocation, productivity, commissions and incentive schemes, and performance evaluations. A good head for business is a must as business development, including store expansion, property negotiation and channel development, are also part of the duties. This is a complex role with a great number of responsibilities.
