He said he was making money at last after spending nearly 20 years paying back debts and hanging on during the Sars outbreak against the advice of his investor friends.

Mr Yasumoto, who has pledged $100 million to a scholarship and student exchange plan at the Chinese University, said: 'I want to spend money on Hong Kong because I make money here.'

Mr Yasumoto, the director of Given, said: 'This is my responsibility.'

'Wherever I make profits, I return part of them to society. I don't take all of the money back to Japan.

'It is always my philosophy, as taught by my father, that I should not make money for myself, but also for society.'
