Soccer, racing provide the kicks

Teri Fitsell

SPORTS enthusiasts are the winners again tonight. Ever popular Racing Night Live pays its weekly visit to the highly-charged atmosphere of a Happy Valley night meeting (World 8.30pm). Robin Parke and Lawrence Wadey are there, giving their tips before each race and endeavouring to look neither too smug (if they won) nor too furious (if they didn't) afterwards.

Much later on the emphasis turns to soccer and the chance to see three World Cup Qualifying matches live. Andrew Sams will introduce the Portugal v Italy match (Pearl, kick-off 3.30am), and as a pre-match warm-up there'll be highlights of the teams' first clash earlier this year (3.15am).

Northern Ireland v Ireland goes out live at 4am on Prime Sports, and the crucial Argentina v Australia game (TVB Jade 9am) from the notorious River Plate stadium in Buenos Aires.

A NEW series of Tycoons (Pearl 8.30pm) kicks off with a profile of Anita Roddick, the founder of The Body Shop, the phenomenally successful chain of beauty shops renowned for its environmentally-friendly products, natural ingredients and opposition to testing cosmetics on animals.

Roddick, whose personal creed is that business should be for the public good, is the subject of serious study at universities around the world for her groundbreaking philosophy.

WOLFGANG Petersen's political thriller In The line of Fire starring enduring hero Clint Eastwood comes under close, behind-the-scenes, scrutiny in The Making Of . . . (World 10.30pm). Eastwood, face now resembling a crumpled paper napkin, plays an ageing secret service agent on the trail of wannabe presidential assassin John Malkovich. The film opens in Hong Kong tomorrow, and advanced word says it's a winner.

ABOUT the most interesting factoid about the main movie, Martial Law (Pearl 9.30pm, original running time 100 mins) is that it stars Chad McQueen, son of Steve. He plays an LA cop cum karate expert whose girlfriend (Cynthia Rothrock), by incredible coincidence, is also a cop cum karate expert.

David Carradine, as McQueen's brother, is the spanner in the works. He's secretly in league with a gangster and (surprise!) karate expert, who's behind a series of underworld murders. Average.

PROFESSOR Ho-kei Ma, Dean of the Hong Kong University's Faculty of Medicine, discusses changes in medical training to take in Chinese remedies in Hong Kong Connection (Pearl 7pm).

In view of the handover in 1997, she believes strong links between both medical professions are vital, and student doctors here must have sound knowledge of Chinese illnesses and treatments.

GIVEN recent sensational developments in the bizarre life of Michael Jackson, More Dangerous Than Ever (MTV 7pm) seems a badly thought-out title for a special on the superstar.

The programme promises behind the scenes footage of his Remember the Time video and an interview with its director John Singleton, as well as live performances for MTV10.
