Clapping resonated on Earth as well as in space last night when Nie Tianxiang, the 11-year-old daughter of astronaut Nie Haisheng, sang Happy Birthday to her father as he orbited the planet. Tianxiang and her mother, Nie Jielin, travelled to the Beijing Aerospace Control Centre which had arranged a special session for the families to talk to the astronauts. 'Papa, I miss you,' Tianxiang said, before asking her father how he felt. 'I feel wonderful,' said Colonel Nie, who turns 41 today. As Tianxiang started singing Happy Birthday in Putonghua, workers at the control centre started clapping along. Colonel Nie and fellow astronaut Fei Junlong also clapped their hands. Colonel Nie's eyes filled with tears when his daughter started singing, according to state media, but this did not stop Tianxiang from asking: 'Papa, can you give me more applause? When you are back, I will give you more claps in return.' Colonel Fei told his family that the view from space was beautiful. 'It feels great,' he said. His son, 14-year-old Fei Di, also arranged to go fishing with his father after he returned. The families' conversation lasted seven minutes.
