Petit Pomerol G/F, 5 Shelter Street, Causeway Bay 2915 7282 The fare Continental European The ambience Stepping into this restaurant is like stepping somewhere into the middle of Europe. You will also notice a zany sense of humour in the quaint decor, with whacky, even outrageous, three-dimensional wall decorations to illustrate an assortment of culinary terms such as blind-tasting (faces with noses and mouths but no eyes, above a glass of wine) and hairy mushroom (we will leave that to your imagination until you visit the restaurant and see for yourself). The cost About $600 a head without wine. Who to bring Your lover, or friends who pursue the good life. Turn-ons The coq au vin (chicken braised in red wine) is heavenly?you can savour the hours of effort put into the making of this precious dish. The soupe de poisson (fish soup) is done as it is in France, with bits of fish meat floating in the potion, into which you dip pieces of toast with rouille (mayonnaise, bread crumbs, garlic, saffron and chili flakes). Other dishes, such as the duck leg confit, are also expertly done. The wine list is a winner, with a reasonably priced wide selection on offer. Turn-offs The location is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it is appropriate for a restaurant of this kind to be tucked away; on the other, it is a hassle to get here by public transport or to find a parking space. Extras Petit Pomerol offers a selection of non-pasteurised cheeses, a rarity in Hong Kong.
