There are scores of options to choose from in a city where new entertainment zones are springing up at an astonishing rate.

The Shanghainese are most proud of Xintiandi, a nightlife zone, but it is by no means the only after-dark scene in town.

Grand Prix punters can take in a traditional Chinese acrobatic show, a classy hotel bar, an English-style pub or a heaving nightclub.

Sports bars

Most have several big screens, showing different of sports in various parts of the bar. Favourites are

Old Jazz Bar

The jazz-loving old-timers keep on belting out foot-tapping standards at the Peace Hotel (tel 6321 8888).

Charming Shanghai

An over-the-top show where elements of the new China-  razzle dazzle, laser beams and showbiz - are melded with traditional China. Tickets from Shanghai Art Theatre (tel 6272 0331 / 6272 0332).

Shanghai Circus World

A huge complex, where traditional Chinese shows are performed. Acrobats and contortionists included (tel 6652 7750).

Huangpu river cruise

A chance to appreciate the city's varied architecture (tel 6329 9992).

Bars and clubs

Henshan Road is packed with bars, restaurants and clubs, as is the area across from the Hilton hotel and around the corner in Julu Road. Clubs include the Buddha Bar (tel 6415 2688), Club dkd (tel 6384 8777) and Madame Zung (tel 5382 0738).

Live music

There are a number of locations with live music: The Cotton Club (tel 6437 7110); The Portman Ritz-Carlton bar (tel 6279 8888); House of Blues and Jazz (tel 6437 5280) and Jazz 37 at the Four Seasons hotel (tel 6256 8888).

Wine bars

Standalone wine bars are becoming increasingly popular. One of the finest is Senses Wine Lounge (tel 5492 1655). Zin Wine Bar and Grill (tel 6385 8123) is also popular.
