Bank charges fair in helping recoup costs
I am writing in response to the recent article 'Bank of China the first to levy charges on current accounts' (SCMP, October 6).
The Bank of China (HK) will impose charges on current accounts next month. The charges will be imposed on accounts with an average monthly balance below $5,000.
I think it is a good idea that will help the bank to save on resources.
Some people hold a few accounts with a few thousand dollars in each. The bank uses its resources to send statements or information to one person with several accounts.
However, the bank should consider the needs of low-income families. They may be using the accounts to auto-pay bills such as school fees. I think they should be exempt from paying charges.
