donald fails to grant the wishes of the business community
Donald Tsang Yam-kuen was yesterday given a pithy reminder that there is no such thing as a free lunch, even if you are the guest of honour.
At this year's Joint Business Community Lunch at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre - an annual post-policy address tradition - the chief executive was given a comprehensive wish list by attendees during a Q&A session.
After being asked to protect the harbour and outlaw racism, the topic of air pollution came up. Mr Tsang reeled off familiar initiatives but you only had to look out of the window to question their potency.
Likewise one proposal in this year's policy address is that government drivers will be given guidelines requiring them to switch their engines off while waiting. As for private drivers, well, the government is appealing to you to 'exercise the same self-discipline'. Given many countries outlaw the idling of engines, it's not quite the stuff to take your breath away.
