A mainland man was jailed for life yesterday for a series of violent robberies against women. Zeng Fanyong had previously been found guilty of two counts of robbery, two counts of wounding with intent and one count of possessing an offensive weapon. Ms Justice Maggie Poon Man-kay, in the Court of First Instance, sentenced him to life, with a minimum non-parole period of 12 years for each of the first four offences and three years for the fifth. The judge said Zeng was a cruel serial offender who had no qualms about perpetrating violence on his victims, even if they had already given him what he wanted. She cited one case in which he smashed a woman's head against the ground until she was unconscious, even though she had handed over her belongings. On another occasion he repeatedly stabbed a woman who refused to give up her handbag even after he had twice plunged a knife into her abdomen.
