RELATIONS between China and Britain have been the subject of heated discussion in Hong Kong.
Although I think we dwell too much on this issue, it is a subject which deserves our attention.
Talks between the two sides have dragged on for a long time and still no agreement has been reached. So many rumours have circulated, because there has been so much secrecy surrounding the talks.
With the arrival of Chris Patten as Governor, some of the disagreements came out into the open. Depending on which position people took, he became the object of both criticism and praise.
Mr Patten is a diplomat, but also a politician, and it would not be wise to trust everything he says or does.
We all face the dilemma of deciding whether to support him or not.
When one looks at the Basic Law and then compares it with the policy addresses made by the Governor, it is obvious to see that Mr Patten has been violating some aspects of the Basic Law. In this respect China does have a case.
