We all knew something fishy was going on at Government House - and today we bring you the first picture of Donald Tsang Yam-kuen's controversial $300,000 fish ponds.
A row broke out after the chief executive announced he would splash the public's cash on his pet koi carp, but he may have satisfied some of his critics - at least they are getting two fish ponds for the price of one. Mr Tsang's dozen carp will be swimming freely there in about a month.
'We expect the work will be completed after November. The move-in of the [chief executive's] residence and his office will be arranged after the renovation work has been completed,' said a spokeswoman at Mr Tsang's office. Hopefully Mr Tsang, who ordered the fancy fit-out for his well-pampered pets as part of 'ancillary landscape improvement', will be satisfied with the results.
Mr Tsang, who has described his carp as 'my good friends', said earlier that it was appropriate to have a fish pond at a mansion that a Chinese family will live in. The fish ponds are just a small part of the $14.5 million renovations at Government House.
