Where: Rm 2010, 20/F, Southern Centre, 130 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai What: The Hong Kong Family Welfare Society (HKFWS) was established in 1938 and originally known as the Social Service Centre of the Churches. It assists and counsels families in distress and also conducts preventive work targeted at family problems involving children, youths, single parents, new arrivals and the elderly. How: Visit www.hkfws.org.hk or call 2527 3171 for more information. The organisation provides a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for young people. They are now recruiting volunteers for a raffle ticket sale to being held in November and December. Other volunteer activities include flag selling on November 26 for the Community Chest. Teen volunteer: Tsoi Ching, 15, is a fourth-former at Po Kok Secondary School. She has been doing voluntary work with HKFWS for three years. 'In Form One, I joined the Understanding the Adolescent Project run by social workers from HKFWS. The programme offers leadership training, camping activities and opportunities to take part in social services. We mainly serve children and teenagers. Sometimes we organise visits to The Peak for children and arrange games for them at the organisation's centre. I don't have any siblings, so playing with children is a special activity for me. I also help organise camps for younger students. The most memorable events usually happen during the camps, where we stay up all night and chat. Organising these activities has given me a great sense of achievement. As a volunteer and leader, you must not shy away from hard work and must be willing to take the initiative to talk to people. You must also be responsible. I was very shy when I was in Form One. But I'm braver now and capable of speaking onstage in front of a large crowd.' I believe that most family problems stem from misunderstandings. This past summer, I joined HKFWS' Heath Increase the Peace Project which taught us how to resolve conflicts peacefully. We have designed a poster and are now preparing a drama performance that we hope to perform in various schools to teach the things that we've learned. Doing volunteer services is fun. It often brings many surprises, as well as breakthroughs in your personal growth and development.'
