The beverages contain a lot of sugar which stays in the body and turns into fat. Also, those who have soft drinks regularly have a high risk of getting diabetes. Although the disease is mainly associated with the elderly, more young people suffer from diabetes these days. Moreover, too much sugar can cause tooth decay and lead to bad breath. Students have a right to choose their favourite soft drinks. But schools should not sell drinks that can harm their students. Children who want to cool off during the summer can replace their soft drinks with natural fruit juice or water. This is a much healthier option and will have the same effect. Don't drink soft drinks just because your schoolmates do. Sugary drinks can make some children hyperactive and affect their concentration in class. Children should be encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle from a very young age. Therefore, schools should ban soft drinks from their canteens. But we should be able to enjoy a can or two during hot, summer days or after a physical education lesson. If adults can have coffee - which is not a healthy beverage - every day, why can't we enjoy a soft drink? Soft drinks would become even more attractive for young people if they were banned in school. Students would be able to buy them in supermarkets, or from vending machines. I doubt such a ban would work. Does the government want to punish young consumers if they drink something that could lead to obesity? Then they should ban chocolate, McDonald's and potato chips - they are junk food, too! There is no absolute 'right drinks' or 'wrong drinks' in the world. It is acceptable to have a moderate amount of fat and sugar. The only effective way to keep students healthy is to promote the importance of regular exercise and a balanced diet.
