For America's No2 grocer, verifying China sources is key
ALBERTSONS, THE second-largest grocery chain in the United States, has been examining its supply chain mechanisms in recent years and has shown an interest in two areas: buying directly from the mainland and making certain its supply chain is safe.
Albertsons director of global sourcing Robert Thomson set up the office in Hong Kong about a year ago. He travels around the region looking for potential suppliers and then puts them through the process.
'We use a number of verification methods as well as visiting trade fairs. We also use the TDC [Hong Kong Trade Development Council] registry and work with the consulates general. And we use the Web sometimes to find what looks like an interesting company, but you must verify that they are who they say they are,' he said.
'They might turn out to be an eight-year-old kid in a flat in Shamshuipo.'
He said business had become more complicated. An increase in terrorist attacks across the world meant it was extremely important to make certain the entire supply chain was safe, he said. To this end, Albertsons takes great care in what it does.
