Millions fought off stiff competition to win the 2005 Carnegie Medal for children's literature and it is easy to see why the book came out tops. This little gem of an odd-ball tale is wonderfully written and totally engaging.

Young Damian is obsessed with finding out everything he can about every Catholic saint who ever existed.

He drives his father and brother mad with his never-ending chatter about Saint This and Saint That.

One day he is sitting all alone by the railway track, when a bag of banknotes falls down from the sky. This is obviously a gift from a saint who recognises Damian's goodness, so he has no problem accepting the money.

But Damian and his brother soon discover that spending or giving away a million pounds is not as easy as they thought.

Millions is a refreshingly funny and touching story for readers of all ages.
