PCCW has come under fire for pushing down the contract price for its outsourcing services despite the economic recovery.

About 200 angry workers yesterday staged a protest in front of PCCW's head office in Taikoo Place over their salaries being cut by 40 per cent over the past three years due to the low contract price offered to their employers by the telecommunications giant.

The workers are employed by former middle-management staff who were given the option of setting up companies to provide services to PCCW during a round of layoffs three years ago.

Hong Kong Telecommunications Industry Employees General Union chairman Ha Chi-hung said about 1,700 frontline staff were working for 17 such companies installing telephone lines and doing repair work.

Mr Ha said the workers decided to voice their grievances before the telecom giant further exploited the contractors and their workers.

'All staff have been working hard for their companies and accepted the pay cut amid the economic downturn. However, PCCW continues to exploit the companies and their staff even during the good times - PCCW earned $1.6 billion last year and another $1.1 billion for the first half of this year,' he said.
