A 61-year-old man was confirmed to be infected with the pig-borne Streptococcus suis bacterium yesterday, taking the total to 13 cases so far this year.

The man from Ho Man Tin had travelled to Guangzhou in September.
He was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on October 5, one day after developing back pain and lower-limb weakness. He was in stable condition last night.
Laboratory tests confirmed yesterday that he was infected with Streptococcus suis.
The Centre for Health Protection said his family members had not developed any symptoms but were under medical surveillance.

On October 24 a 43-year-old chef died of the disease. He worked as a cook at a centre for the elderly at Hong Tung Estate in Sai Wan Ho.
