Offshore students set to boom

More foreign students are likely to take offshore courses with Australian universities by 2010 than those studying on campus, according to new research.

Last year, 64,000 overseas stu- dents were enrolled with Australian universities in their home coun- tries, 100,000 fewer than those studying in Australia.

But the researchers believe the offshore total could be a consider- able under-estimate as not all enrolments are reported to the fed- eral education department.

One of the main reasons for the growth will be the large unsatisfied demand for higher education in Asia, notably in Hong Kong and in the mainland.

In their report, Christine Bateman and Allison Doorbar say competition is intensifying and new providers are emerging.
