Jockey Douglas Whyte made it three wins yet again at Sha Tin yesterday as he hurtles towards another championship win and odds-on favourite Jiang Jun gave him the ideal showcase in which to display his talents.
The green three-year-old has given wayward displays at every public appearance of his brief career and was ready to throw away the Kap Shui Mun Handicap over 1,000 but Whyte found a remedy in running yesterday to get the hotpot back on track for a comfortable win.
'He was the most difficult of the three, that's for sure, and the penny just hasn't dropped with him yet on what racing's about,' Whyte said after Jiang Jun, Hail The Storm and Clean Sweep took him to 29 successes this season with only a quarter of the term gone and well on the way to another century.
Dennis Yip Chor-hong-trained Jiang Jun had been a very solid second to All's Well up the straight in his race debut but the son of Danske didn't appear to have learned a lot from that experience when he stepped out this time around.
'He came out fine and switched off for the first 100m, which at least gives you some hope that he is learning something, but then Corey Brown on Speed Fighter gave his horse a smack and mine immediately hung left,' Whyte said.
'I was able to get him going again and get him to go into a narrow gap and that made him straighten up. In the end he's won well enough and he'll be all right when he learns what he's doing, but there certainly is a bit of schooling needed yet before he gets there.'
