KIDNAPPERS in Peru are demanding US$300,000 (HK$2.18 million) ransom from a Hong Kong woman for the release of her captured nephew, who is an immigrant to Peru from China.
Liu Yan-ling, 22, was working as a cook in a Chinese restaurant when kidnapped earlier this week, a spokesman for the Peru Consulate-General in Hong Kong said yesterday.
''We suspect it was the work of another Chinese man or a Chinese group,'' the spokesman said.
First reports from the Lima newspaper Expreso said the Tupac Amaru guerillas were suspected of the kidnapping.
But the spokesman said, because of his nationality, it was unlikely Mr Liu was kidnapped by Peruvian guerillas.
The kidnapper contacted Mr Liu's only relative in Hong Kong, Ip Lai-wah, to negotiate his release, the spokesman said.
