Court hears more evidence on last year's North Point crash

A passenger of a minibus involved in a fatal crash in North Point last October told the District Court yesterday the driver embarked on a race with another minibus after his bus had been overtaken.

Chung Kam-fook, 50, said on that morning, near Tong Chong Street, a minibus from the adjacent lane cut into the lane of the minibus driven by Liu Chun-pong, forcing Liu to give way by slowing down.

But Liu's bus then began to accelerate, chasing the minibus that just overtook his along King's Road at over 50km/h. Both buses sped through several red traffic lights during the chase, the court heard.

Mr Chung said he got scared, fearing the chase between the two could lead to collision. 'I held tight onto the back of the seat in front of me ... to be prepared in case of a collision.'

Mr Chung gave evidence yesterday as a prosecution witness in the trial of minibus drivers, Liu, 25, and Poon Wing-kay, 30. Both are accused of causing the death of Lee Lai-chuen and Lung Kai-hon by dangerous driving on October 22 last year.

The two also face a joint charge of causing bodily harm to their passengers by racing. They have denied all charges.
