New species of flowers - including green orchids - will tempt the crowds at the Lunar New Year Fair in Victoria Park next year.
But supplies of the usually popular tangerine trees will be limited, as farmers and dealers have still not recovered from painful memories of the scare over red fire ants that arrived with the trees last year.
Flower farmer Yeung Siu-lung said two new varieties of orchids - with red and green flowers - would be introduced at the festival.
The two new breeds, imported from Taiwan, will sell for $200 to $300.
'I know many tangerine tree dealers lost a lot of money last year, and most flower farmers like us avoid growing tangerine trees. We are growing mainly flowers and are importing more orchids,' he said.
Another flower farmer, Lau Hoi-tao, said he lost about $800,000 on his stalls at last year's fair because of the fire ants that hitched a ride from the mainland on tangerine trees.
