Hong Kong should be ashamed of its performances at the East Asia Games. To give it a perspective as to how bad we performed, our so-called weaker cousins, Macau, scooped a host of medals that demonstrated just how poor Hong Kong sport is.
If one compares the pool of talent, Hong Kong has over twice as many people to choose from as New Zealand. Yet the Kiwis are tearing around the globe dominating world rugby. Hong Kong on the other hand is barely competitive in most sports. Why? A government obsessed with money and profit, as opposed to recreation, health and international excellence on a sporting field.
Hong Kong is a joke on the global sporting stage - and will remain so, unless the government provides adequate funding to allow athletes to excel.
If this trend continues, an amalgamation with the mainland will prevent further embarrassments.
