There had been a 'mutual understanding' that Polytechnic University would get land that has since been earmarked for commercial development, its president said yesterday.

Poon Chung-kwong was responding to comments by Secretary for Education and Manpower Arthur Li Kwok-cheung that the government had never made any promises to PolyU, which had hoped to be given the site in Hunghom for dormitories.

The site is next to Ma Tau Chung Government Primary School in Hunghom Bay.

Professor Poon agreed there had been no formal agreement, but said: 'Professor Li has always supported our plan to expand student accommodation and said he would try his best to assist us in negotiating with the government to get more land.

'It was only a mutual understanding, not a promise. We are not trying to accuse the government of reneging on its promise.'
