Hong Kong alumni from the University of Waterloo (UW) are raising funds to help more students from the SAR and the mainland to study at the top Canadian institute.
The campaign will help recruit outstanding university students by building on the existing Hong Kong Alumni Association Award Fund. Financial support will also be expanded to include graduate students.
UW president David Johnston was in Hong Kong last week to seek alumni's support. He said their target is to raise C$1 million ($6.5 million) for the scholarship scheme.
'There are many good students in Hong Kong and the mainland. But some of them do not have the chance to
study abroad due to financial reasons,' said Rex Auyeung, the honorary chair of UW's Hong Kong Alumni Association.
The award fund was set up in 1987, and so far, 15 students have received financial assistance to further their education at the university.
