LEADING ASIAN AND international designers will speak at the Business of Design Week (BODW), billed as Asia's premier international design event.

Now in its fourth year, a highlight of the week will be a three-day international conference featuring top designers and business leaders.

The Lifestyle Asia: International Conference and Forum will be held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre from tomorrow to November 22.

The event will feature business design in the four key areas of 'automotive', 'hospitality', 'branding', and 'museums and expo', as well as the categories 'lifestyle and retail' and 'communication'.

Deeper and broader discussions will 'drive the  event to greater heights', according to Freeman Lau, chairman of the Hong Kong Design Centre, the organiser of BODW.

Mr Lau explained the importance of fostering exchanges on the key issues: 'As the Pearl River Delta develops to become a major car accessories centre in the region, it has opened its doors for car and car accessory design opportunities.

'There is potential growth in hospitality design as tourism continues to flourish in Hong Kong, and among the latest trends in hotel development are boutique and lifestyle hotels.

'Branding is getting more significant as businesses in China are reinventing themselves to establish strong brand names in the growing market.'

He said there was a greater interest in museums and expo designs in the light of  Hong Kong's West Kowloon cultural district project.

A series of other activities has been organised as part of BODW, including a seminar on how design education can meet challenges arising from changing lifestyles in Asia. Design Education Day: Nurturing Future Design Talents for Asia will be held at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus today.

To give recognition and exposure to established and emerging designers, presentations for the 2005 Design for Asia Award, the World's Outstanding Chinese Designer Award and the Design Leadership Award will be held at the Hong Kong Design Centre Gala on Monday. The winning designs will be displayed at the Innovation & Design Expo from Monday to Wednesday, co-organised with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

DETour 2005, which runs until the middle of next month, will consider designs in Hong Kong's food culture in a series of tours, sessions with designers and an exhibition at ArtTube, at Central MTR station.
