Accounts panel eyes Henderson land deal

The Legislative Council's Public Accounts Committee may lodge its own investigation into the Buildings Department's grant of bonus land to Henderson Land for its Grand Promenade residential development at Sai Wan Ho, committee chairman Philip Wong Yu-hong said yesterday. It follows the chief executive's decision to launch an inquiry after the Audit Commission claimed on Wednesday the move cost the government at least $125 million in lost revenue.

Activist seeks legal review of reform package

An activist has applied for legal aid to file for a judicial review of the government's proposed constitutional reforms. Applicant Carl Ching Lok-suen, of the Grassroots Democratic Society, said the inclusion of appointed district councillors into the 800-member Election Committee violated the principle of a democratic and open election as stipulated in the Basic Law. His earlier bid for a judicial review failed.

Tsang to face Legco's House Committee

Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen will attend a meeting of the Legislative Council's House Committee on January 12. Chief Secretary Rafael Hui Si-yan earlier this week rejected the request by committee chairman Miriam Lau Kin-yee asking Mr Tsang to attend the council's question and answer session once a month. Mr Tsang will only attend four times a year.
