A restored landfill in Tseung Kwan O will be turned into a football training centre for young people. A sports association has secured funding to build and operate the centre on the 62-hectare site, assistant director of environmental protection Ellen Chan Ying-lung said. It is also planned to use the Shuen Wan landfill as a place to fly toy aircraft. The moves are part of restoration plans for 13 closed landfills in the city. But four in Kwai Chung and the northwestern New Territories need further aftercare and monitoring for toxic chemicals, which will cost taxpayers $97 million up until 2015. So far, the city has spent or committed nearly $3 billion to restoring and taking care of the 13 landfills. Officials said landfills normally needed 30 years of aftercare.
