For the first time, a team - rather than an individual - was honoured in the Hong Kong Sports Institute's (HKSI) quarterly Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards. This quarter marks the first time that a team was allowed to be nominated for an award. The junior girls' squash team, comprising Annie Au Wing-chi, 16, Joey Chan Ho-ling, 17, Chiu Ka-kei, 17, and Leung Shin-nga, 16, were very proud to win the accolade. Annie and Joey have both won the award in the past. 'We are very happy to win as a team,' Joey said at the ceremony held last Thursday at the HKSI in Sha Tin. 'This is very exciting and more meaningful.' The team clinched a gold medal at the Women's World Junior Team Championship held in Belgium in July. They have now set their sights on defending their title at the 2007 Asian Junior Championships and World Junior Team Championships to be held in Hong Kong. HKSI chief executive, Chung Pak-kwong, congratulated the winners, as well as the athletes who had been nominated for the awards. 'The competition has been keen for this quarter since we have received a record number of 21 individual/team nominations,' Chung said. The awards also recognised athletes who have excelled in individual events. Swimmer Sze Hang-yu, 17, won her second junior athlete award. She took seven gold medals at the Asian Indoor Games in Bangkok and also achieved three best times in individual races. 'I was surprised to win,' Hang-yu said. 'I had not been doing well before Bangkok. I was surprised and very happy with my performance.' Handicapped swimmer, Leung Shu-hang, 17, also won her second award. She won three gold and three silver medals at the INAS-FID World Swimming Championships in the Czech Republic in September. She is looking forward to the 2006 FESPIC Games and the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. Kwok Hoi-ying, 19, won her first award for her achievements in boccia. She is the first boccia player to win the award. She won a gold medal in singles and team events at the Asian and South Pacific Boccia Championships in Malaysia in September.
