Special prizes will be awarded to the best entries from students in the the 2009 East Asian Games slogan competition.

The Games will be the first-ever major multi-sports event held in Hong Kong, and organisers are seeking creative ideas for a catchy slogan to help promote the showpiece.

The deadline for entries is tomorrow, and members of the public can enter online, and are allowed up to five ideas each. The best idea, selected by a panel of judges next month, will win $30,000, and be used as the official slogan. More prizes will be awarded in different categories, including one for schools. Organisers and elite athletes last week visited Kowloon True Light Middle School to encourage students to learn more about the Games.

School principal Esther Chan Yuen-sheung said she hoped students all over Hong Kong would enter the competition to show their support for the Games.

'Young people have their own way of thinking that can be very creative,' said Chan. 'It's simple to enter and I hope they can persuade their families to enter, too.'

Students said they already have some ideas. 'I think something related to teamwork would be suitable,' said Wong Yi-lam, 15.
