Shoppers experienced the brave new world of poultry sales when a wet market opened in Mongkok yesterday.

Chicken stalls at the market in the Tai Kok Tsui complex in Fuk Tsun Street are away from other goods and a glass wall shields customers from the birds.

'We are the second one after the market at Yue Wan Estate in Chai Wan to separate poultry stalls from other stands and provide them with independent ventilation systems and parking place,' senior market health inspector Yiu Wing-chun said. 'The poultry stalls have a separate retail section, scalding room and live poultry section.'

Shoppers use an intercom to talk to vendors.

Some customers have complained about the inconvenience.

'It may be a good idea to keep us safe, but it is also very inconvenient when we don't know how to make the vendors hear our requests,' said a shopper who lives next door to the market.
