How to bet

At the racecourse, you can place bets and collect dividends by going to the service counters, using self-vending terminals, multipurpose terminals or multiticket betting terminals. Service counters accept electronic shroff cards, cash vouchers and cash. Self-vending terminals and multipurpose terminals do not accept cash, and multiticket betting terminals only accept electronic shroff cards. You can buy the cash vouchers at any counter or multipurpose terminal. For electronic shroff cards, you first have to apply for a betting account.

These betting facilities are also available at the off-course betting branches. There are 111 branches around Hong Kong, and most have live TV coverage  of the races.

You need a betting account to use products and services such as telephone betting, online betting, mobile online betting, customer input terminal, PDA betting service, MangoCombo, mobile betting and two-way messenger. To apply for a betting account, go to any service counter. It can be done in minutes.

Betting pools

Tierce: Selecting three horses which finish first, second and third in exact order.

Trio: Selecting three horses that finish first, second and third in any order.

Win: Selecting the horse that wins the race.

Place: The selected horse must finish first, second or third.

Quinella: Selecting two horses, which must finish first and second (in either order).

Quinella Place: Selecting two horses which must finish in any two of the top three placings.

Double Trio: Choosing the first three placegetters (in any order) in two nominated races.

Triple Trio: Choosing the first three placegetters (in any order) in three nominated races.

Double: Selecting the winners of successive races.

Treble: Choosing the winner of the last three races

Six-up: Finding either the winner or second placegetter in the last six races on the programme. There is a bonus payment for finding all six winners.

All up: Betting on two to three races. Dividend in previous selected race(s) will be invested automatically in subsequent selected race(s). Pools available are Win, Place, Quinella, Quinella Place and Trio.

Cross Pool All Up: Betting with four different pools of two to six race combinations. Dividend in previous selected race(s) will be invested automatically in subsequent selected race(s). Pools available are Win, Place, Quinella and Quinella Place.

Minimum bets and dividends

All bets are in $10 units. A $5 unit is accepted for multiple bets of Double, Trio, Tierce, Treble and Double Trio, provided the total ticket value is greater than $100. A $2 ticket is accepted for multiple Triple Trio and Six-up bets, provided the total ticket value is greater than $100. All dividends are semaphored for a full $10 ticket.

A win dividend of $90 means a return of eight times your $10 investment, plus that $10 stake returned in full. On the tote indicator boards, dividends are expressed as multiples of $1, though some television monitors show them for the full $10.

How to get there

KCR East Rail is probably the best way to get to the Sha Tin Racecourse. There are trains to the course every five to 10 minutes, starting from 10.41am from Tsim Sha Tsui East and 11.15am from Sheung Shui.  The last train leaves from the course to Tsim Sha Tsui East at 5.14pm and to Lo Wu at 6.32pm. Buses run only before the first race and after the last race.

There are no buses that go directly from Hong Kong Island to the racecourse. There are only three bus routes to the course from  Tuen Mun, Lam Tin and Lee On, and only two to three buses for each route. If you decide to take a bus, make sure you check the schedule beforehand.

There are 14 bus routes leaving from the course after the races, going to Tuen Mun, Tai Po in the north, Island Resort, Wah Fu and Kennedy Town on Hong Kong Island and many other places in between.

All buses will wait at the course from one hour before the last race until one hour after the last race.

Distance: 1,000 metres

First prize: $5.7 million
