TiVo will launch its personal video recording services in Taiwan on Thursday, marking the American company's first foreign foray since quitting the British market two years ago.

TiVo will launch services through its minority-owned Greater China subsidiary, TiVo Greater China, with set-top boxes being sold at retail outlets throughout the island through distributors Synnex and Ta-tung.

TiVo Greater China's other shareholders include Mobius Capital and Softbank Asia.

The service will be a scaled-down version of what is available in the United States. Company officials described the Taiwan product as an earlier version of the TiVo service in the US.

Customers will be able to purchase a digital video recorder with a 160-gigabyte hard drive, enough to store 160 hours of standard quality video. They will need to connect the box to the internet for programme schedule downloads.

Officials declined to disclose the price but added the box would include a year's subscription.
