This time, Brotherhood is on your side

Product: X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse Price: $230 Pros: Intense, visually engaging and enjoyable game play Cons: Complex keyboard controls

There is no greater measure of success in the video gaming industry than generating huge demand for a worthy sequel to a certified blockbuster. X-Men Legends, released last year, went on to become the best-selling action role-playing game (RPG) title from the popular Marvel Entertainment franchise.

Publisher Activision and game developer Raven Software have teamed up again to deliver X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, a suspense-filled sequel to the original.

The new RPG unfolds through challenging single-player missions as in the original, where players are tasked to create, customise and control teams of four mutants.

A player controls one character at a time, while the three other team members are run by the game's artificial intelligence.

Legends II features six multiplayer skirmish modes offering online and offline gameplay. The online option was absent from the first title.

Also this time, players are tasked to create Super Hero dream teams featuring 16 popular X-Men and classic Brotherhood villains. These characters unite for the first time to overcome Apocalypse, the ultimate threat to the survival of both humans and mutants.

The story starts with the X-Men and Brotherhood embarking on the rescue of Professor X, who was captured by Apocalypse.

With the X-Men and Brotherhood fighting side-by-side, players switch instantly between teammates wielding amazing superpowers as they overcome obstacles, solve puzzles and defeat more than 100 types of enemies. That diversity gives players an unprecedented arsenal of superpowers to employ as they battle enemies in exotic locales.

If your system is equipped with a sound card and decent speakers, try playing the game in stereo and surround sound. The enhanced audio could help provide you with an adrenaline boost to keep up with the fast-paced gameplay.

The graphics environment is almost the same as the first X-Men Legends, but the sequel offers sharper images.

Whether you are a fan of the X-Men or not, this futuristic RPG is well worth including on your games wish list this Christmas.
