Passengers need more options for bus travel

Not long ago, most of the buses in Hong Kong did not have air conditioning.

Most of  the non-air conditioned buses  are being phased out.

In a few years,  we will have no choice but to ride in air conditioned buses.

It seems that bus companies have forgotten that Hong Kong has winters.

The air conditioning is turned up high, and  even if we feel cold, we have no choice.

Bus companies should  operate some buses with windows that can be opened and have the air conditioning turned off during cold weather.

This would not only make passengers feel more comfortable,  but help save  the environment.

Women can balance career and marriage

An increasing number of Hong Kong women have career as their first priority over getting married.

Economic independence is one reason why women choose to remain single.

Also, the purpose of marriage has changed. In the past, the purpose of marriage was to produce children to carry on family lines.

Nowadays, women marry not because they want to please their parents or to attain financial security, but to find love and spiritual fulfilment.

There are many women who prefer to remain single. I believe staying single is better than being  married to an unsuitable companion.

But women should try

their best to appreciate the advantages of a relationship.

Spending time to learn to get along with different types of people  is the best way to build a successful marriage.

Idols not all ideal

Why do teenagershave idols? It's because they are impressed with their idols' achievements.

Many teens idolise singers who are very successful.

There are many fan clubs for Canto-pop stars that allow people with the same idol to gather and share their opinions. Teens can make friends  from the meetings.

But some teens spend a lot of money buying goods to support their idols. Also, some young people idolise people who live unhealthy lifestyles.

If you have doubts about your idol, ask your  older relatives for advice.

Banish HIV stigma

December 1 was World Aids Day. On that day,  the Red Cross  passed out red ribbons to spread the message that we should not discriminate against people with HIV. There are 40.3 million people in the world with HIV; about 64 per cent of them live in sub-Saharan Africa.

HIV patients need care and  treatment, not discrimination.

Unfair fare discounts

The public transport fare adjustment mechanism is useless to many residents.  The discount is only for same day   return trips on the same route.

Many people need to travel to more than one place during the day and are unable to take the same route on the return trip.

The government said it was hard to get the discount. I think its ability to negotiate may be the  problem.

Working to improve

I  participated in the recent Biliteracy and Trilingualism competition.

My English is at a good  standard, but what worried me most  was my  Putonghua.

When I came across  words that I didn't know how to pronounce, I  became very nervous and my voice  faltered.

I did really badly, but I'm not upset.  I will continue to learn Putonghua to improve.

Learn from Ah Wong

We can learn much  about optimism from Ah Wong, the mentally handicapped character in the TVB Jade programme Life Made Simple.

Many of us, when faced with defeat, give up. But Ah Wong is different.  No matter how hard the task is, he  tries his best  and never gives up.

Although Ah Wong is mentally handicapped, he still loves life.

Follow his example and treasure your life.

Collecting rubber erasers is one of my hobbies. I don't  believe it is outdated just because instant messaging has replaced letters as a way of keeping in touch with  friends and family.

You can learn a lot about each eraser. You can also proudly show your collection to your friends.
