ALTHOUGH ALL AREAS of mainland accounting and audit are buoyant, Ambition managing director Guy Day and his team have identified segments of the market that will be 'hot' next year.

Internal audit: Biggest demand over the past two years; positions are now more attractive than ever. Demand is high but limited talent supply remains the challenge.

Tax and Treasury: Demand is being driven by the moving of Asia-Pacific head offices to Shanghai and Beijing. Senior manager and director level roles are the most difficult to fill.

Commercial and strategic positions: These roles are perceived as the more glamorous side of finance. Success in filling these positions depends as much on the candidate's interpersonal skills as it does on their technical ability.

Start-up experience: With more firms seeking a larger mainland presence, there is strong demand for finance professionals with sound experience in establishing legal/financial company vehicles.

Junior and middle management: This area has the highest staff turnover and there is an expectation gap in salary levels. Needs recognition that top candidates will command higher salaries.
