THE EMOTIONAL Competence Inventory (ECI) used by the Hay Group measures 18 competencies organised into four clusters: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. When soliciting feedback from your manager, peers or direct reports, a rating system based on five points ranging from 'never' to 'consistently' is used. Here are six of the competencies measured: How transparent are you? This question is based on your ability to keep promises, bring up ethical concerns, publicly admit mistakes and act on values. How adaptable are you? This depends on how open you are to new ideas, how you adapt to new situations, how you handle unexpected demands and how you adapt strategies. How is your initiative? This is based on how you address opportunities and whether you seek information, make an extra effort and initiate actions. Are you empathetic? That depends on how well you listen to others, read non-verbal clues, remain open to diversity and see others' perspectives. How good are you at influencing people? This is based on how well you engage an audience, anticipate the impact of actions or words, use indirect influence and develop support. What about teamwork? This measures how well you co-operate and whether you solicit input, encourage others and build bonds. Although all 18 of the ECI competencies are important, you may not have to master them all to be successful. A combination of some competencies can be equally effective.
