IT is good to note that First Lady Lavender Patten takes her role as patron of innumerable charitable organisations seriously.
Wearing her hat as patron of the Hong Kong Association for the Mentally Handicapped, Lavender visited the Century Hotel to meet Jackie Li, the only mentally handicapped person to be employed in the local hotel industry.
Jackie, who operates the service lift used for luggage, proudly showed Lavender around his workplace and also told her how the opportunity to be gainfully employed had helped him to make a financial contribution to his family for the first time.
The visit was made all the more meaningful by Lavender's genuine interest in Jackie and his welfare.
We are told one or two people present were even reduced to tears by the touching occasion.
