Judging by the scenes in Wan Chai yesterday it seemed that Lunar New Year holidays had arrived early. We're not talking about heaving hordes of the faithful at Wong Tai Sin temple but the empty streets and complete absence of traffic that descends over the city at that time of year. So it was yesterday, as the general public, almost to a man, heeded official calls to stay home.

But across the harbour we were pleased to find a hardier group, in the form of 200-plus small shareholders attending annual meetings for Li Ka-shing's Hongkong Electric and Cheung Kong Infrastructure. Despite having to run a gauntlet of roadblocks and electronic screening, the mostly senior citizens voted with their feet and of course scooped the customary free lunchbox afterwards.
