Jazz's peculiar status as music that belongs somewhere between bars and nightclubs on the one hand and concert halls or conservatories on the other is implicitly acknowledged this week by PLTC.
The band, formed in June, take their name from the initials of the members: bassist Peter Scherr, guitarist Lawrence Ku, trumpeter Toby Mak, and drummer Chris Trzcinski. The quartet, which played at the Music and Drama Institute last night, will perform at The Blue Door in Central tomorrow and Innonation in Causeway Bay on Saturday - two very different venues.
The Blue Door offers an intimate jazz bar atmosphere, while Innonation, a music and performing arts education institution, will present the band in a more formal context.
Both venues promise exciting sounds - along with a back-projected visual complement - from some of the most talented and innovative musicians playing in China.
'It's DIY sight and sound,' says Scherr, who describes the music as 'incendiary indie jazz'.
Ku is prominent on the jazz scene in Beijing, while Mak made a name for himself in Australia and now lives in Shanghai. American Trzcinski lives in Shanghai, while Hong Kong-based Scherr also works as a concert promoter and record producer. All of the band's members are composers and instrumentalists.
