Perhaps Love

lau kit wai

Perhaps Love, the first big budget modern Chinese musical in 30 years, is a full-bodied romance from director Peter Chan Ho-san.

Mainland actress Zhou Sun plays Sun Na, a mainland star caught between her director boyfriend Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung Hok-yau) and her old flame Lin Jian Dong (Takeshi Kaneshiro).

Things get sticky as the three are brought together in Shanghai to shoot a musical in which Sun and Lin play reunited lovers and Nie the jealous boyfriend.

The film features top notch camera work by the renowned Christopher Doyle and Oscar-winning Peter Pau Tak-hei and catchy music by Canto-pop composers Peter Kam Pui-tat and Leon Ko.

The lively dance sequences, expertly choreographed by Bollywood's Farah Khan, take place against the colourful backdrop of set designs by Yee Chung-man.

But the simple love story remains the heart of the film, and this is where Chan proves his worth as Hong Kong's romance drama king.

He provides plenty of heartfelt moments without resorting to cliches, as well as an unconventional ending.

Heartthrob Kaneshiro delivers the performance of his career and Cheung - despite his slightly over-the-top acting - provides some excellent vocals to justify his reputation as Canto-pop king.

But it is Zhou who dominates the movie with her moving interpretation of Sun - a volatile woman whose ambition drives her away from love.

Perhaps Love is a rare cinematic triumph.
