Would-be volunteers interested in sports and athletics activities might find themselves naturally drawn to the services offered by the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Mentally Handicapped (HKSAM).
The association offers an abundance of opportunities for people who wish to give some of their time to a body that needs help to organise year-round sports activities involving more than 25,000 participants.
The association was founded in 1978 by a group of professionals dedicated to serving the mentally handicapped.
Its mission is to organise a series of outdoor and indoor activities that mentally handicapped people can enjoy, while promoting their mental and physical health and opening up opportunities for social interaction and mingling with the community in general.
The programme covers a wide range of sports, from swimming, badminton, soccer and gymnastics to ice-skating, bowling, wushu, dance and table tennis.
The quality of the training is kept to a high standard and competitions are held after the completion of a training programme.
