After months of controversy, the name of Asia's richest man is set to be attached to the oldest medical school in Hong Kong - but opponents of the move are not going to take it lying down.
The University of Hong Kong's medical faculty will soft-launch itself as the Li Ka-shing faculty in the new year, associate dean Raymond Liang Hin-suen said.
Low-profile preparations for the change are under way, including new letterheads, staff name cards and a sign to be put outside the faculty building in Sassoon Road.
'We don't have the exact day for a grand launch, such as inviting Mr Li to a ceremony,' Professor Liang said. 'There is no specific request from Mr Li.'
The school is being renamed in recognition of a $1 billion donation from Mr Li. The decision, endorsed in May, unleashed a storm of protest from faculty members and graduates.
Legislator Kwok Ka-ki, who heads the Concern Group to Preserve the Name of the Faculty, said he and other alumni were ready to start another wave of protests once the launch was announced.
