Dear Jaime, What is the best study method to get good grades? Jonathan Hi Jonathan, It is very important to concentrate when you are studying. 'To concentrate' means to be able to direct your thinking. People often find it hard to study because their mind wanders from one thing to another, or distractions stop them from focusing. When studying, you have to take back control of your thinking. When you sit down to study, remove distractions like your mobile phone or the computer and avoid loud music that will distract you. It's also important to have a specific place to study. You could study at the kitchen table instead of your bedroom so you won't feel like sleeping. Alternatively, you could go to a public library. To get good marks, you should also re-read your notes and summarise what you learn in class each day. If you summarise the material covered every day, you'll be much better prepared when exam time comes because you have already gone through all your work. This means you won't be faced with an overwhelming amount of material to read the night before an exam. I also recommend that you take regular study breaks. Going for a walk every hour or so will help get you out of your normal study zone and give your mind a rest. Dear Jaime, Can you suggest ways for me to increase my self-esteem? I find it hard to like who I am. I am always putting myself down and don't know how to accept compliments. Can you give me any advice? Sharon Hi Sharon, Building self-esteem is my favourite topic. I don't know you, but I can already tell you that you are amazing. Why is this so? Because you have the confidence to write to me and ask for tips on how to improve the way you see yourself. The first thing I want you to practise is accepting and giving compliments. A compliment is an expression of praise, appreciation, admiration or congratulations. Give yourself compliments every day. I want you to keep a journal. Before you go to bed every night, write down five things that you can compliment yourself on. The next morning, read them out loud to yourself in the mirror. Another thing I want you to start doing is to stop comparing yourself to others. You are unique. Write down a list of areas where you think you can compare yourself with other people, then next to that, make another list of how you are unique and special compared to that person. This is the first step. E-mail me if you want some more tips.
