Since founding Shantou University on the mainland in 1981, Li Ka-shing has donated more than $1.8 billion to the institution. In March this year, Mr Li donated a Hong Kong record of $1 billion to the University of Hong Kong's medical faculty.

Last month, Stanley Ho Hung-sun pledged $500 million to the University of Hong Kong. The pledge is a matching grant to any other funds the university is able to raise over the next five years, up to a maximum of $100 million a year.

Last year, the foundation set up by Henry Fok Ying-tung pledged US$80,000 to each Chinese gold medallist of the Athens Olympics. Mr Fok also has donated $200 million for the National Aquatics Centre for the Beijing Olympics.
