'Shocking' amount of food wasted after binges
'Shocking' quantities of food are discarded after Christmas eating binges, says a group working to promote healthy produce.
More than half of the city's families eat a lot more than usual at Christmas and an average 2.4kg of food is left over after each festive season party, according to a survey by the Produce Green Foundation.
Foundation chairman Simon Chau Sui-cheong said it was shocking how much food was wasted.
'With so many people not having enough food to eat and starving to death, wasting so much food is a very serious problem,' he said.
The survey, jointly organised with Hong Kong Baptist University's Community Based Instruction Programme, was conducted in October and November and involved 352 people aged 13 to 35.
It also found that teenagers will each attend two or three Christmas parties this year, up 15 per cent from last year. They spend an average of $542 each year.
