Golf's secret agent scores hole in one
Bruce Chan's covert gathering of data on mainland golf courses led to golf007.com - and a new career
When the going gets tough, the tough get going - or in Bruce Chan Wing-hong's case, golfing. Mr Chan is one of the few people who can claim that his business was a direct result of the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
After studying in Cheltenham in England, Mr Chan returned to Hong Kong in his early 20s and worked in property consultancy for 20 years. He was a broker for Vigers before starting his own property company, now run day to day by his business partner.
After a hectic 1995 and 1996, the property market slumped post-handover, leaving him with time on his hands. A friend took him to the Waterfall Golf Centre in Pokfulam and he was immediately smitten but the game proved a challenge.
'I went out on the golf courses later hoping I was like Tiger Woods but it's very hard to learn,' he says. 'I started playing in 1997 when the property market wasn't too clever and just fell in love with it and tried to play as many courses as possible.'
Unable to get access to the Hong Kong clubs, he went to China to practise. The original idea for a specialist golf website evolved from friends pestering him for information about the mainland courses he visited.
